Working from home is definitely not for everyone, but can be incredibly productive if you make a few small adjustments. 1. Face The Wall. Literally! Want to get a lot of work done from home in a short amount of time? Set up your ‘office’ facing a wall – not overlooking the street in front of your house – not the luscious backyard – not where your kids are playing. Facing a wall will eliminate distractions and you will get your work done in half the time so you can go play with your kids in your backyard or practice ukulele 2. Remove Clutter From View Need I say more? Just keep the essentials within your workspace: computer, necessary work documents, phone, headphones, notebook, pen, water,…you get the idea. 3. Get Noise-Cancelling Headphones To get some peace and quiet while other family members are at home consider getting some noise-canceling earbuds or headphones. They are great not only while you are trying to get some work done, but also to just get away from your family for a little while to listen to your favorite music or audiobook. I have the Bose QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Earbuds, but I find that often I don’t even use the noise-cancelling feature. The silicon earpieces alone keep most of the noise out already. Update Your Website People may not be out and about right now spending money and patronizing local businesses. HOWEVER, they still need and want to buy things and want to do business with you. Now is the time to get your website updated and refreshed. I know money may be tight in the coming weeks and I’m not talking about a complete redesign. If you can do it yourself go for it – if not contact your web designer and have them to it for you. A couple of hours of web design work should be in your budget (you can always contact me). A little immediate TLC for your website will pay off now and later: update some photos add/remove team members make sure your address and contact info is correct update your products and services make sure your prices and fees are still up-to-date don’t forget to add an opt-in form to your website! Now that you have a opt-in for on you website it’s time to… 5. Work On Your Mailing List I’m sure you’ve been thinking about cleaning up your contacts and starting to send out newsletters to your clients containing valuable information about your business or industry. Now is the time! I just finished cleaning up all of my contacts and finally uploaded them into MailChimp. Now that you are all set up and ready to send out your first newsletter this is the perfect time to start writing your first blog post(s)…(yay!) 6. Write Blog Posts! (plural) I’m sure you’ve heard me say that before many, many times: write and post to your blog every week. This may be your chance to catch up or get started on your first blog post. Eventually life and business will return to a ‘normal’ level and you are getting ahead right now by posting blogs that will start indexing in Google and other search engines. 7. Use Video Conferencing Apps Can’t meet with your clients? Use web and video conferencing tools like Zoom, GoToMeeting, and Google Hangouts. I personally prefer to use Skype just because it is easy to use and free. My pilates study started using Zoom to share classes and it is working out great! 8. Take Regular Breaks This tip is not only for when you work from home but also once you return to the workplace: take regular mental and physical breaks. Go for a walk in the backyard, walk up and down your stairs, do some pushups, shrug your shoulders, stretch, practice an instrument, revisit your French vocabulary, drink water. Whatever you choose to do during your break stay off social media! I use Healthier and love it. I can determine the duration for work and break times, and type of breaks (a timer, quotes, or exercise tips). I have it set to prompt me every 45 minutes for a 3-minute exercise break and sometimes I practice some new chords on my ukulele. Our lives have taken quite a turn these the last few days no thanks to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus. ‘Shelter in place’ will, or in some places already has, become part of our lives for the unforeseeable future. For some of you, it may be EXTREMELY hard to deal with working from home and spending so much time cooped up in your home or apartment. I grew up as an only child and have been working from home for the better part of the last 20 years. Yes, it can be isolating and yes, I did feel lonely and left out at times, but I took measures to keep my physical and mental health intact. My tips below are not only applicable to the current ‘shelter in place’ situation, but for anyone that is working from home in general or for any other reasons. I want to mention that we don’t have children however the tips below may be applied to anyone’s living situation. I will also include some links for reference to the exact products mentioned. 1. Keep Your Morning Routine & Get Ready To Go Nowhere Get up at a reasonable time, shower, get dressed, and eat breakfast in the morning as if you were getting ready to leave to house and go to work. Getting ready includes shaving, a little makeup, perfume/cologne, small jewelry, etc. Ladies – this presents a good opportunity to give your hair and hot styling tools a break. Btw, last time I got a haircut was Oct. 16th, 2019 – that’s 5 whole months. And who knows when I will get another… 2. Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Good You don’t need to wear your ‘work’ clothes, just a comfortable pair of jeans and a cute shirt will do to make you feel more motivated and put together. Wearing ‘regular’ clothes and taking care of your appearance will make you feel so much better when you see your reflection in the mirror or computer screen. I like to wear Levi Strauss Pull-on Skinny Jeans (they feel like leggings but look like skinny jeans), a cute graphic T-shirt, Jockey Seam-free Bralette for comfort, and Keds on my feet. 3. Bring Your Coffee Shop Home Years ago I used to take (almost daily) trips to my local coffee shop to grab my favorite drink just to ‘get out go the house’ for a bit. In December of 2018 I gifted us a Nespresso Essenza Mini Espresso Machine and Aeroccino Milk Frother and OMG do I love it! Now I get to enjoy an amazing cappuccino in my beautiful, white, porcelain cup while ‘stuck’ at home and perhaps catch some rays in the backyard or catch up on the news. FWI – I return the used capsules when the return bag is full and Nespresso will recycle the grinds and aluminum capsules. No matter if your coffee preference is a French press, pour-over, or a fancy Espresso drink – give yourself the gift that keeps on giving: great coffee at home. Show some support for your local coffee shop and place an order on their website: Temple Coffee, Chocolate Fish, Identity Coffees, Pachamama, Old Soul Co., to name a few. 4. Cook A Meal I know you can still order out or have food delivered, but maybe instead cook a meal for you and your family. You may not be able to pick a recipe and go shop for the ingredients, so try using what you have in your fridge, pantry, and freezer – you’d be surprised what you can do with all kinds of random ingredients you already have. Just get creative or google some of the main ingredients you have and recipes will come up. I’m a trained chef so I love tinkering with random ingredients to create new dishes and interesting flavors. 5. Workout At Home With DVDs & Online Streaming Services I started doing workouts from home in 1982 with a cassette tape and foldout instructions and later moved on to Beachbody’s Workout DVDs like P90, then P90X, Insanity, Brazil Butt Lift, and many others. About four years ago (2016) I stumbled upon Inferno Hot Pilates at Purely Hot Yoga which ticks all of my boxes. Sadly, all classes are currently canceled. However, they just started streaming workouts via Zoom and pretty much all regulars have shown up. Yay! Alternatively, go for a walk or run (if allowed), order a few workout DVDs that do not require any equipment like pilates or yoga, or sign up for one of the many streaming workout services. Get moving and stay fit! This is also good for your mental health. 6. Learn Something New Like A Foreign Language Or Instrument The next few weeks or months present the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill. My better half decided on to take on German while I picked up an instrument on Nextdoor for cheap. Last year I was playing with the idea of picking up an instrument after my teenage piano lessons were a complete fail; perhaps learn ukulele? After watching countless YouTube videos and searching for the right size and model for me … BOOM! A Kala Long Neck Soprano Ukulele popped up for sale in my Nextdoor feed (3.3.2020). I jumped on it and within 3 days I already learned 8 chords and I can play just about any song I want thanks to a few awesome free YouTube courses. If you are interested in learning a foreign language there are tons of free apps to download to your phone that will get you started. 7. Catch Up On Chores Like Cleaning And Fixing Things I just finished cleaning the filter in my dishwasher and earlier today I vacuumed, swiffered, and mopped the entire house. I also finally fixed that rattling real license plate frame on my car. At this rate will run out of things to clean and fix by the weekend. I do have a few pieces of clothing draped over the back of my chair that are in need mending – but those can wait a bit longer. What may you tackle in your home? Perhaps deep-clean the fridge or oven door? Fix that dripping faucet? Finish that necklace or sweater you started knitting years ago? 8. Dust-off Puzzles & Games I know you’ve got some cards and games stashed under the bed or on the top shelf of a closet. Now maybe a good time to dust them off, refresh your dice-throwing skills, and reconnect with your family perhaps over a game of Sorry? 9. Take an Online Class Or Webinar May it be a photography class or something that advances you at work – take an online class or sign up for a webinar. I’ve played this game many times: Client: I’m not sure what to do for marketing. I’m thinking about buying keywords from Google and maybe some Facebook ads. What do you think? Me: I think you should save your money and while I am building your new website you should start making a list of topics to blog about that relate to your business and start writing. Client: I hate writing! And nobody is going to read it anyways… Me: You don’t write for people (well, maybe a little bit), you write for Google and other search engines. Google bots crawl your website on a regular base and take notice of new post blogs and other new content. Make sure you structure each new blog post around one topic and include targeted keywords accordingly. Also, share your blog posts on social media. When people click on the links and go to your website you are starting to build ‘authority’ with Google. More Authority = Higher Google Rankings. Client: Yeah, well, that sounds like it will take up too much time and take way too long to see results. Me: You don’t need to write a book’s worth of content every week. 500 words or 3 short paragraphs are enough to get you started. Granted 2000 words are better, however, I’d rather have you post shorter articles more often than one long post once a year. Over time blogging will raise your Google website rankings – permanently and for FREE! Persistency Pays Off One amazing example of dedication and persistence is junkking.com. A ‘king’ indeed when it comes to content creation. Their website has hundreds of pages (if not thousands) on junk removal – no other junk removal company can rival their top Google rankings built slowly over time… Write & Share This could be you! The ‘king’ of your industry. Write and post to your blog once a week and share it on your social media accounts. Yes, it may take you a couple of hours of your time, so pick a comfortable, quiet place and just do it. Once you start writing & ideas will flow and you just want to keep going. I’m not saying that any of these are better than others – but if you don’t know how to use those website builders then you are no different than someone trying to be YOU overnight and assume you have all the knowledge and experience it took you years to acquire and perfect. Makes sense? 1. How much is YOUR time worth? Let’s say the average smaller website runs about $1000 to $3500 (depending on the platform, features, designer experience, and geographical area) and takes between 15 to 60 hours to build – this makes it roughly $63/hour to would your website…that’s pretty affordable in my opinion. So, is it worth spending evenings, weekends, and any other spare minutes you may have to try to learn yet another thing – or are you better off getting new clients and selling more products instead? 2. What are your website needs IN THE FUTURE – not today! Make a list of features you need on your website today AND (more importantly) in the future: Pull testimonials from review sites automatically Event calendar Blog Payment portal/donations Ecommerce Customer accounts Booking apps Custom design/look etc… 3. How much time & money are you willing to commit to your website EVERY MONTH? Stupid question? Not at all if you think that: WordPress needs a bit of ‘hand-holding’ every month: WordPress, Theme, and all Plugins need to be updated. Sometimes they don’t play together nicely and break something or crash your site = 15 to 60 mins spent per month = $$$ spent Squarespace: no updating needed (it’s included in your monthly subscription) = 0 mins spent per month – $0 spent 4. What platform should I choose? WordPress? Subscription-based? Custom-coded? This is best answered with a phone call or meeting with your web design company since this requires quite a bit more research and greatly depends on your future needs and budget. 5. Will you be able to make changes yourself? Great question! Do you want to post blogs and make simple text updates yourself? Then you better find out how easy (or complicated) it will be on your chosen web design platform. In my opinion, however, I suggest you hire a local professional to do website updates of any kind.
